Advent – we wait…
Taking a little chance here and offering free daily Advent Devotions for Creatives for 2018. If you are anything like most of the “creatives” I know out there…well, you hate waiting. Personally, I stink at it. In the United States, it seems that stores stink at it too. In October, they begin putting up Christmas decorations and advertising power buys. Perhaps that is really to meet the expectations of the organized, but for years I have been listening to people complain about stores “rushing” Christmas. At one time, I myself jumped on that bandwagon, but as I age, I try not to sweat the small stuff so much.
For me, the items being out so early wasn’t the sense that they were rushing Christmas (or let’s be honest, exploiting it to make a profit), but rather they were skipping Advent. So, what is “Advent” actually? Is it the Star Wars Lego Advent Calendar intended to “count down to Christmas” that we Schafers purchase every year??? I know my faithful liturgical colleagues will say, “no, it is waiting for the second coming of Christ.” It is waiting for that time when Christ will come again, in glory, to finish what was started; to gather us in to himself as we were intended to be. Advent in the simplistic form, means to “wait.” It is hard to deny that for much of the commercial world, it has also been stolen to mean, “waiting for Christmas so you buy lots of things from us and we make money…” Seems the commercial world has become a new voice for Christmas, and as Creatives, we miss out on a great deal of beauty and mystery when that voice wins.
But it doesn’t have to win…For a creative, Advent is the a time of the year when our “creative juices” find themselves on overload in the worship space. The colors of the paraments (all those pretty clothes and coverings around the church) change to a beautiful royal blue. The golds of Chrismons, hanging on ever green trees that make the entire church smell of forest, twinkle and shine.
Official Advent Devotions from Jittery Wings begin Sunday, December 2, 2018. As these Advent devotions continue toward Christmas, I will talk in more detail about some of these amazingly wonderful symbols that remind us of God’s work in our lives. I hope you will continue through this journey with me…as we wait…and create…in the image of our Creator.
To respect the religious beliefs of each and every one of my followers, I will not be sending out devotions in my regular emails. Instead, if you would like to receive the devotion in your daily email, please click below and provide you email. You will ONLY receive the devotions if you subscribe here…
