Caper Quilt Along Week 1: Fabric Choices

Welcome to Week 1 of the Caper Quilt Along!

I am pumped you are here. There are hundreds of us and it is going to be so awesome!

This week we start with learning about color and I padded the weeks so you have time to get your fabrics even with shipping delays. I don’t want you to be disappointed that your lovely fabric choices don’t arrive in time. So go now!

I have added a couple of ideas for you here in this post and linked to shops that carry them but feel free to come up with your own combinations. I will be using the Chalk & Charcoal Bundle I curated with Jennifer Sampou from Robert Kaufman. You can see that and purchase it here while supplies last.

Making your Own Fabric Choices?

I recently posted a very thorough Tutorial on Color Theory for controlled improv. I invite you to read through that before you make your color choices. You can find that here. If you are unsure about your choices post them in the Facebook group and I will provide feedback. You are also welcome to send me an email.

Choosing a Pre-Cut Bundle

The nice thing about choosing a pre-cut bundle is that the fabric designers are color gurus and the hard work is done for you. IF you are choosing a pre-cut and coordinated bundle from a shop, be sure to choose solids or blenders. Sharp, abrupt prints, whether they are large or small, can feel jarring in this quilt and pull the eye away from the flow. Fabrics really need to “read” as a single color.

TIP No. 1: It is likely that the bundle is already in color theory/flow order, so try and keep it in order.

Below are some suggestions to consider. Note that I don’t get anything from these posts. I am literally just sharing the ones that I think would work well for this pattern.

Idea No. 1: Free Spirit Solid Basics from Crimson Tate

This bundle is soOOOooo lovely. It will work beautifully. There are two bundle options. One with 21 and one with 30+. I am showing the 30+ because yummy, and why not make your quilt a little bigger? You can simply add a couple of rows and columns as you go.

Idea No. 2: Cotton + Steel Basics from Hawthorne Thread

There are 50 in this bundle. Grab an extra fat quarter of 2 or 3 of them and you will have enough to make a queen!

Still Need the Pattern?

JOIN THE FACEBOOK HIVE GROUP

The HIVE Group is BACK! While I am not a super fan of Facebook, as I launch this new Caper Quilt Along, I must be honest that the most fun I ever had in a quilt along was the All the Good with the Facebook group. So, here we are! Welcome!

+ + + + + + + + + + + + + + +

The Jittery Wings HIVE group is a place for quilt encouragement + support! A place for all-level quilter bees. While we all have our favorite ways of doing things as quilters - and humans, there is no one way to quilt - or live. Here we strive to teach new skills without being quilt police. Here we make new quilters. As you are working on quilt patterns - specifically, but not limited to my Jittery Wings patterns - post your images, ask questions, pat yourself on the back for a finish or for learning a new skill. We can't wait to see your makes!

NOT ON FACEBOOK? That is totally okay. You can tag me on IG using @jitterywings or send me an email for help. I try to respond in 1-3 business days as I often travel for my day job.
